Berlin:Both runways at Berlin Brandenburg Airport were closed for approximately 45 minutes on Wednesday evening following reports of a drone sighting above the north runway.

According to Anadolu Agency, the airspace over the airport was shut down at 8:20 pm local time after the drone was seen at 8 pm. The closure resulted in several incoming flights being redirected to other cities.

The airport spokesperson announced that the airspace was reopened at 9:05 pm, allowing flights to resume, although delays were experienced. A federal police spokeswoman informed the Bild newspaper that multiple witnesses had reported the drone sighting, leading to at least five flights being diverted to Dresden and Leipzig.

Authorities are still investigating the nature of the drone, with uncertainty about whether it was a hobby drone, a deliberate intrusion, or another type of object. Germany's air-navigation service, DFS, noted that Berlin Brandenburg Airport recorded 28 drone sightings in the first half of 2026, a significant increase from eight in 2025, with operations affected in seven instances. Similar drone sightings have been reported over military sites and critical infrastructure.
