Dutch Government Enacts Ban on Trade in Goods from Israeli Settlements

The hague: The Dutch government has announced a new measure that prohibits the trade of goods originating from Israeli settlements located in the occupied Palestinian territories, such as the West Bank and the Syrian Golan Heights. This decision was ratified by the Council of Ministers, as reported by local media.

According to Anadolu Agency, Dutch online newspaper NU highlighted Prime Minister Rob Jetten's remarks, indicating that the ban aims to exert pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government. Jetten stated at a press conference post-cabinet meeting that the Netherlands remains committed to opposing violations of international law and promoting humanitarian aid. "To increase pressure on the government of Netanyahu, the cabinet has agreed to the sanctions," Jetten declared.

The trade ban specifically targets goods, as Dutch ministers cited a 'clear basis' in European law to justify this action. However, a more comprehensive ban that would include services and investments is still under consideration. This initiative follows a prior call by the Dutch parliament for a national import ban, which was propelled after a broader proposal at the EU level failed to gain unanimous support from member states.

In efforts to bolster enforcement, Dutch officials plan to collaborate with other nations, including Belgium. The trade ban is set to last for three years, with the possibility of extension or modification through legislative measures. To ensure the swift implementation of this policy, the government has requested an urgent advisory opinion from the Council of State.
