Amsterdam: Dutch opposition leaders and lawmakers have urged the government to recognize a Palestinian state, following French President Emmanuel Macron's announcement on Thursday that France will move ahead with formal recognition in September.

According to Anadolu Agency, Frans Timmermans, leader of the Green Left-Labour Party, expressed support for Macron's decision, stating on X that "Macron is right. The recognition of Palestine is a necessary step toward peace. Time for the Netherlands to take that step too." He criticized The Hague's inaction amid ongoing violence and starvation in the Gaza Strip, calling it "unacceptable."

Sarah Dobbe of the Socialist Party added her voice, urging the Netherlands to follow France's example. She described the Dutch government's refusal to act as "shameful and inexcusable," emphasizing the need for change.

Rob Jetten, leader of the Democrats 66 party, also called on the government to "stand firmly" for humanity and international law rather than ignoring the suffering in Gaza and the West Bank.

Stephan van Baarle, party leader of DENK, announced his intention to submit parliamentary questions, asserting that the Netherlands should recognize Palestine as a state, following France's lead.
