Dutch Red Cross Warns El Nino Threatens Global Food Security and Water Supplies

The hague: The Dutch Red Cross raised the alarm on Tuesday that extreme weather linked to the approaching El Nino event could threaten food security and risk causing water shortages worldwide.

According to Anadolu Agency, "Extreme weather always hits the people who have the least the hardest," said Harm Goossens, the director of the Dutch Red Cross, in a written statement. He emphasized that vulnerable populations will face increased challenges from drought, floods, or extreme heat, which heightens the risk of food shortages and disease.

Goossens highlighted that drought could lead to harvest failures and increased food prices, with severe food insecurity potentially affecting regions such as Sudan, South Sudan, and the Middle East. He urged for proactive measures, stating, "By taking action sooner, we prevent a great deal of suffering, and ultimately, aid is cheaper and more effective."

The director further stressed the importance of timely action to prevent extreme weather conditions from escalating into a major humanitarian disaster. "The greatest gain lies in preparation," Goossens added.

The World Meteorological Organization recently issued a warning, indicating an 80% chance that El Nino will emerge during the June-August period, with a likelihood of it persisting through at least November reaching near or above 90%.
