Paramaribo: The Netherlands' King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima arrived in Suriname, marking the first state visit by Dutch royalty in 47 years. Their visit to the South American nation, which was once a Dutch colony, commenced late Sunday.

According to Anadolu Agency, the visit is taking place at the invitation of Suriname's President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons and will continue until Wednesday. A statement from the Dutch Royal House emphasized the visit's objective to "highlight the broad cooperation" between Suriname and the Netherlands. The statement further elaborated on the focus of the visit, which aims to acknowledge the shared history between the two nations and promote cooperation, exchange of ideas, and future partnerships in various areas.

Throughout the three-day visit, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima are scheduled to engage with President Geerlings-Simons and her ministers. They will also visit Suriname's National Assembly and High Court of Justice. Additionally, meetings are planned with representatives of descendants of enslaved people and indigenous communities, reflecting a commitment to addressing historical ties and fostering inclusive dialogues.
