Egypt Denies Involvement in Ethiopian Conflict

Cairo:Egypt has denied any involvement in the ongoing conflict in northern Ethiopia, stating that the crisis is an internal matter for Ethiopia.

According to Anadolu Agency, Egypt's state news agency MENA reported that an official source emphasized the importance of not being diverted by attempts to misrepresent the internal issues driving the events in Ethiopia. The source expressed surprise at a statement by the African Union Commission, which called for restraint from Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt to prevent further tensions.

The Egyptian source criticized the statement as an attempt to unnecessarily involve Egypt in Ethiopia's internal affairs. The source further stated that Egypt's foreign policy adheres to international law and the principles outlined by the United Nations and African Union charters, focusing on sovereignty, non-interference, and maintaining good relations with neighboring countries.

The African Union's statement came after the diplomatic fallout between Ethiopia and Eritrea, as well as the expulsion of diplomats between Egypt and Ethiopia. The conflict in Ethiopia intensified in September when fighting resumed between Ethiopian federal forces and an opposition alliance led by the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), affecting southern Tigray and the neighboring Afar region.
