Istanbul: Egypt aims to double the number of Turkish tourists visiting the country in the coming years, following a 40% increase last year, Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy said. Speaking at a press conference at the East Mediterranean International Tourism and Travel Exhibition (EMITT) in Istanbul on Wednesday, Fathy said diplomatic ties between Trkiye and Egypt have strengthened, bolstered by high-level visits by the two countries' leaders.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Egyptian minister highlighted that the collaboration between Trkiye and Egypt extends beyond tourism to other sectors, including cultural heritage. Fathy mentioned a recent meeting with Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy in Ankara, during which the Turkish government returned artifacts that had been confiscated from smugglers. This gesture was part of a broader memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed to enhance cooperation in tourism and other areas.
Tourism growth and targets were a key focus, with Fathy noting the significant rise in Turkish visitors to Egypt and expressing confidence in further growth. He encouraged increased promotional efforts in Trkiye and emphasized the potential for reciprocal tourism between the two nations. Despite geopolitical challenges, Egypt recorded a 6% increase in tourist arrivals last year, reaching 15.75 million visitors, with tourist spending rising substantially.
Fathy also discussed plans for a master plan for the Pyramids area, which includes the Sphinx International Airport and the Grand Egyptian Museum. He emphasized Egypt's commitment to facilitating foreign investments in hospitality infrastructure and highlighted the country's attractiveness for investors.
Europe remains Egypt's primary tourism market, but Fathy noted a surge in visitor numbers from Gulf countries, particularly Saudi Arabia. For the summer season, he expressed optimism about strong pre-booking demand and high occupancy rates.
Fathy reiterated Egypt's commitment to strengthening tourism cooperation with Trkiye, including promoting reciprocal marketing initiatives. He outlined plans to engage influencers and professionals from both countries to enhance tourism promotion efforts, aiming for a mutually beneficial cooperation that boosts tourist numbers for both nations.
