Cairo: Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty engaged in a phone conversation with his Sudanese counterpart, Omar Siddiq, to discuss efforts towards achieving peace in Sudan. The discussion revolved around Egypt's commitment to fostering peace and stability in Sudan, as well as safeguarding the resources of the Sudanese populace. These efforts are part of Egypt's involvement in the international quartet on Sudan, as revealed by a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

According to Anadolu Agency, Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's steadfast support for Sudan's sovereignty, national institutions, and the unity and territorial integrity of the nation. He underscored Egypt's opposition to any actions that might jeopardize Sudan's unity. In response, Siddiq expressed gratitude for Egypt's unwavering support regarding Sudan's sovereignty and security. He also expressed a desire to further enhance bilateral relations between the two nations.

The conversation comes in the wake of developments on the ground, where the Sudanese Founding Alliance, a coalition led by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), announced the establishment of a parallel government on Saturday. This government is led by RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, following a charter signed in Kenya on February 22 by the RSF and associated groups.

The ongoing conflict between the army and the RSF, which has been raging since April 2023, has resulted in over 20,000 casualties and displaced 14 million people, according to UN and local authorities. However, research from US universities suggests that the death toll may be closer to 130,000.
