Cairo:Egypt's parliament has resumed confidential discussions regarding the authorization of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to provide military support to Saudi Arabia. These talks, which include the potential deployment of troops, come amid rising regional tensions.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the current session, led by Parliament Speaker Hisham Badawi, is the third of its kind following two previous meetings held last week at President Sisi's request. The discussions are centered around a presidential request for authorization to offer military assistance to Saudi Arabia, contingent upon a request from the kingdom.
The discussions follow a meeting of Egypt's National Defense Council, chaired by Sisi, which addressed regional developments and recent attacks on Saudi Arabia. Nearly 500 lawmakers have indicated their desire to participate in the parliamentary discussions, suggesting the possibility of more sessions before a final vote. Deputy Parliament Speaker Assem el-Gazzar noted that over 100 lawmakers spoke during the previous sessions, with most supporting the authorization for military deployment.
El-Gazzar emphasized Egypt's commitment to diplomacy as the primary means of maintaining peace. The sessions remain closed to ensure lawmakers have access to sensitive strategic information necessary for decision-making. According to Egypt's Constitution, the president requires two-thirds parliamentary approval and consultation with the National Defense Council to declare war or deploy forces abroad.
The discussions occur amid increased hostilities between Yemen's Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen's government, with Saudi Arabia reporting numerous drone and missile attacks. Egypt's National Defense Council reiterated its support for Saudi Arabia, stressing its commitment to Saudi security and sovereignty. President Sisi has stated Egypt's readiness to take necessary measures at Saudi Arabia's request, while also focusing on diplomatic efforts to prevent further regional escalation.
