Egyptian Parliament to Consider Defensive Aid for Saudi Arabia

Cairo:Egypt's parliament is set to hold a plenary session on Sunday after President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi called for authorization to provide defensive aid to Saudi Arabia, should it be requested.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the Egyptian parliament announced that the session would take place at 1 pm local time (1000 GMT) on Sunday, October 18, 2026, following the president's appeal.

President Sisi, speaking at the Egyptian Military Academy's graduation ceremony in the New Capital on Saturday, emphasized that Egypt is prepared to take necessary measures to defend Saudi Arabia if Riyadh seeks assistance. He highlighted that such action would need parliamentary approval and urged an emergency session to authorize the move if required.

Saudi Arabia has been facing attacks from Yemen's Houthi group. The conflict in Yemen has persisted since the Houthis took control of the capital, Sanaa, and several provinces in September 2014, which led to a Saudi-led coalition intervening in March 2015 to support the internationally recognized government. The fighting resumed in July after a 2022 truce ended.
