Elon Musk’s Long-Standing AI Safety Concerns Emerge Amid Growing Industry Debate

San francisco: Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has reignited discussions on artificial intelligence by revealing that his apprehensions about the technology's potential risks have existed for over a decade. Musk made these comments on the US social media platform X, which is part of his AI venture, SpaceXAI.

According to Anadolu Agency, Musk highlighted his early involvement with philosopher Nick Bostrom's 2014 book, "Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies." Musk noted that he contributed to the book, which explores the potential outcomes of AI surpassing human intelligence and underscores the necessity of implementing precise control measures to ensure humanity's survival. Musk's name is acknowledged in the book's foreword for his contributions. He also referenced a 2014 post in which he recommended the book and cautioned that advanced AI could be "potentially more dangerous than nukes."

Musk's recent comments come at a time when leading technology executives are urging a slowdown in the development of advanced AI systems due to safety concerns. Over the weekend, Anthropic Chief Executive Dario Amodei suggested that independent safety evaluators should be granted access to AI companies to verify their safety practices, a proposal supported by OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman and Musk. Amodei expressed his views on CBS, stating that there are genuine dangers associated with AI development. He emphasized that building AI systems correctly could minimize the risk of adverse outcomes, whereas improper development could significantly increase those risks.
