Baku: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif are set to inaugurate the Lachin International Airport on Wednesday. The airport marks a significant development in the region, being the third airport constructed by Azerbaijan in the territories liberated during the 2020 conflict with Armenia.

According to Anadolu Agency, Lachin International Airport is located at an altitude of 1,800 meters, making it the highest-altitude airport in Azerbaijan. The construction of the airport began in 2021 and involved extensive engineering work, including carving rocks in the mountainous terrain to level the area. It is situated 30 kilometers from Lachin city center, 70 kilometers from Shusha, and 60 kilometers from Kalbajar.

The airport features a runway that is 3,000 meters long and 60 meters wide, with a terminal building capable of serving 200 passengers per hour. On May 26, a decree signed by Azerbaijani Prime Minister Ali Asadov granted Lachin Airport the status of an international airport, information that was communicated to international organizations. This development brings the total number of international airports in Azerbaijan to nine.

Previously, the Fuzuli International Airport was the first airport to be built in the liberated regions, opening on October 26, 2021, with the participation of Erdogan and Aliyev.
