EU Advances Ukraine’s Membership Aspirations with New Accession Clusters

Brussels:The European Union has initiated accession negotiations with Ukraine, focusing on the 'internal market' and 'competitiveness and inclusive growth' clusters. This marks a significant step toward Ukraine's potential EU membership.

According to Anadolu Agency, these clusters encompass areas such as the free movement of goods, services, workers, and capital, as well as competition, taxation, employment, education, digital transformation, industry, and economic and monetary policy.

Irish Minister of State for European Affairs and Defense, Thomas Byrne, emphasized the importance of this development, stating it represents another milestone in Ukraine's journey toward EU membership. Ireland, holding the EU presidency, is dedicated to advancing Ukraine's accession process.

The EU has outlined benchmarks for the provisional closure of chapters within these clusters, indicating that progress will be monitored through alignment with and implementation of EU legislation and standards. This follows the initiation of negotiations on the external relations cluster in July 2026.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude and called for the opening of the remaining two accession negotiating clusters by the end of the year. He acknowledged those fighting for Ukraine and working toward its European future, emphasizing the strength of a united Europe in his message on the US social media platform X.
