Brussels: The EU has expressed its approval of the recently announced cease-fire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, lauding the mediation efforts spearheaded by France and the United States. In a statement issued on behalf of the EU, foreign policy chief Josep Borrell described the development as “a significant achievement,” aligning with the longstanding demands of the bloc and its member states.
According to Anadolu Agency, Borrell emphasized the importance of maintaining the cease-fire to ensure the safety of civilians on both sides of the border and facilitate the return of internally displaced individuals to their homes. He reiterated that the success of the cease-fire hinges on the unwavering commitment of both Israel and Lebanon, stressing the need for mutual respect for sovereignty and the cessation of cross-border attacks.
The EU’s statement called upon regional and international stakeholders to actively support the agreement, touting it as a potential “permanent contribution to regional peace a
nd stability.” The EU also reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging various tools, such as the European Peace Facility, to bolster the Lebanese Armed Forces and the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
The EU pledged to provide humanitarian aid and support for post-conflict recovery to Lebanese communities impacted by the conflict. The bloc emphasized its determination to strengthen Lebanon’s sovereignty and state-building efforts, while urging Lebanese political leaders to address the country’s political and economic crises.
Highlighting the opportunity for Lebanese leaders to resolve their protracted impasse, the EU called for the swift election of a president after a two-year vacancy, urging leaders to prioritize unity and decisive action to rebuild a robust and sovereign Lebanese state.
Under the cease-fire terms, which took effect early Wednesday, Israel is set to withdraw its forces south of the Blue Line de facto border in phases, while the Lebanese army will deploy its forces in southern Lebanon wi
