EU Bank Commits $400M to Central Asia for Green Projects

Samarkand: The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed four memorandums of understanding (MoUs) at the inaugural EU-Central Asia Summit, committing approximately $400 million to foster sustainable transport, water management, and climate resilience initiatives in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. According to Anadolu Agency, these agreements, finalized in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, aim to mobilize up to £1 billion in total investment, aligning with the EU's Global Gateway strategy. The projects are designed to stimulate infrastructure growth, environmental protection, and private sector development throughout the region. Specifically, £50 million will be allocated to Kyrgyzstan via the State Development Bank for infrastructure investments. Tajikistan is set to receive £100 million dedicated to sustainable transport along the Trans-Caspian Corridor. Uzbekistan will benefit from £175 million for water projects, including initiatives concerning the Aral Sea, in collaboration with the French Development Age ncy. Additionally, £40 million will support small-scale transport projects through Uzbekistan's Microcreditbank. The EIB also signed a Host Country Agreement to establish a regional office in Uzbekistan and has initiated discussions with Turkmenistan regarding a framework deal for future operations. EIB Vice-President Kyriacos Kakouris, who oversees the region, emphasized the summit's significance in reinforcing the European Union's and Central Asia's mutual commitment to deepening beneficial cooperation. "As the Bank of the European Union, the EIB will continue to play a pivotal role in strengthening economic ties, promoting sustainability and private sector development, and enhancing infrastructure across Central Asia," he stated. These agreements highlight the EU's increasing engagement in Central Asia through sustainable infrastructure and climate-focused development strategies.
