Brussels: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has issued a strong message to the US administration, urging it to refrain from interfering in European democratic processes. This comes in response to Washington's latest National Security Strategy, which has been critical of the European Union.

According to Anadolu Agency, von der Leyen made her remarks during the POLITICO 28 gala event in Brussels. She emphasized that decisions regarding leadership and elections in Europe are the sole prerogative of European voters. "It is not on us, when it comes to elections, to decide who the leader of the country will be, but on the people of this country," she remarked, underscoring the importance of protecting voter sovereignty.

Von der Leyen criticized any external interference, highlighting the concerns raised by the US strategy document, which warns of Europe's potential "civilizational erasure" within the next two decades. This narrative has resonated with far-right leaders in Europe and Russia, further complicating the political landscape.

The US document also scrutinizes European measures to limit far-right movements, interpreting them as political censorship, and advocates for fostering opposition to the EU's current policies among its member states. In response, von der Leyen highlighted the EU's proposed 'Democracy Shield,' aimed at bolstering defenses against foreign meddling, particularly online and during election periods.

Despite her criticism, von der Leyen reiterated her commitment to transatlantic relations, while advocating for Europe's focus on its own strengths and unity. She acknowledged changes in EU-US relations, reflecting Europe's evolution, but maintained that confidence in Europe's position and values is essential.

Her comments follow recent criticisms by former President Trump, who in a recent interview labeled Europe as "decaying" and its leaders as "weak," suggesting the continent is unsure of its direction.
