EU Chief Warns of Escalation After Houthi Attack on Riyadh Airport

Riyadh:European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has warned that the recent Houthi attack on Riyadh's airport marks a "dangerous escalation." She described it as the deadliest attack on the facility to date.

According to Anadolu Agency, von der Leyen expressed her concerns on social media, emphasizing the attack's impact on regional stability. She stated that such actions by Iran's proxies are leading the region into a "spiral of violence."

The attack resulted in the deaths of several individuals, including four Saudis, two Bangladeshi nationals, and one person each from the US, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine, and Sudan. The Saudi civil aviation authority reported that the injured are receiving treatment, with some in critical condition.

Airport operations were temporarily suspended following the attack, causing disruption to flights. Passengers have been advised to check with airlines before traveling to the airport. Kuwait Airways canceled its Saturday service to and from Riyadh due to the closure.

This incident occurs amid ongoing tensions from previous Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi airports and facilities. Von der Leyen called for an immediate cessation of violence against civilians and highlighted the broader threats to international transport and energy infrastructure.
