Brussels:The European Commission has affirmed that EU member states are united in their goal of enhancing ties with Canada, despite ongoing debates regarding the term "associate membership" in a summit statement.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, at a briefing in Brussels, spokesperson Paula Pinho reiterated the EU's commitment to strengthening its relationship with Canada. She indicated that discussions will continue with the European Parliament, EU member states, and Canadian officials.
Pinho clarified that the concept of Canada as an "associate member" of the EU signifies a closer association with the Union, without granting full membership. She emphasized that the commission and member states are aligned in their approach to fostering this closer association with Canada.
The remarks follow reports of discord among EU member states about including "associate membership" in a joint statement for the upcoming EU-Canada summit. Politico noted that at least four countries, with Germany at the forefront, opposed the inclusion of the term, leading to a stalemate in negotiations.
The proposal for Canadian associate membership was initially introduced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during her State of the Union address. The idea has highlighted differences among EU nations, with some diplomats suggesting a lack of consultation with national governments prior to the announcement.
The EU-Canada summit in Montreal, scheduled for Thursday and Friday, is set to focus on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across various sectors, including trade, energy, education, and the Arctic.
