Brussels: European Council President Antonio Costa on Thursday called for de-escalation in the Middle East and direct talks between Israel and Lebanon during a call with Israeli President Isaac Herzog. Costa urged Israel to engage in direct talks with Lebanon, emphasizing the importance of preserving Lebanese stability and territorial integrity while ensuring the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure.
According to Anadolu Agency, Costa highlighted broader regional concerns, stating that only diplomacy can lead to a sustainable solution to tensions with Iran, including issues related to its nuclear program. He emphasized the need for de-escalation, maximum restraint, and adherence to international law by all parties involved in the ongoing violence in the Middle East.
Costa expressed concern about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, urging for immediate improvement. He also raised alarms over the situation in the West Bank, pointing out the urgency to address settler violence and halt the expansion of settlements. Costa concluded by stressing the necessity to de-escalate the violence and stop the continued settlement expansion.
