Ankara: The EU on Tuesday condemned Belarus' decision to designate the websites and social media channels of several EU-funded initiatives and programs as 'extremist information sources.'

According to Anadolu Agency, the decision affects EUvsDisinfo, the EU-supported SALT and Education for Belarusians programs, and the Central Project Management Agency of EU member Lithuania. This move was announced in a statement by the European External Action Service. The EU criticized this action as another instance of the Belarusian regime's systematic attempts to suppress critical thinking, limit fundamental freedoms, and reduce civic space.

The statement further elaborated that the decision unjustifiably restricts Belarusians' access to independent information and educational opportunities. EUvsDisinfo is involved in raising awareness about disinformation and information manipulation, while the educational programs have facilitated opportunities for Belarusian students and researchers to study and conduct research in Europe.

These initiatives, the statement emphasized, demonstrate the EU's dedication to supporting the Belarusian people and maintaining interpersonal connections. The EU called on Belarusian authorities to immediately reverse the decision and cease what it described as ongoing repression against the Belarusian population.

The EU also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Belarusians' right to access unbiased information and opportunities to study, learn, and work in an environment that fosters academic freedom.
