Brussels: EU foreign ministers will meet in Brussels on Monday to consider new sanctions linked to Russia’s war in Ukraine and to discuss a broad range of foreign policy issues, including developments in the Middle East, the EU’s foreign policy chief said. Ahead of the Foreign Affairs Council meeting, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas expressed concerns about the ceasefire proposed by Russia, describing it as a cynical move to protect their parade while continuing attacks on Ukrainian civilians.

According to Anadolu Agency, the discussions will include potential sanctions targeting individuals involved in the deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia, with high-level talks on efforts to return those children. The ministers are also set to meet with Canada’s foreign minister, highlighting the collaboration on international security and multilateral cooperation, as described by Kallas.

Middle East discussions will focus on maritime security, specifically the EU naval mission Aspides, and potential changes to support demining and escort operations. Sanctions on violent settlers are also on the table, though further consensus among member states is needed.

The agenda includes engaging Syria in a political dialogue on institutional rebuilding and governance reforms. Furthermore, discussions will cover Western Balkan cooperation and the issue of hybrid threats, with Kallas emphasizing the connection between enlargement progress and reforms in candidate countries.
