EU Foreign Policy Chief Calls Timing of Possible US Troop Withdrawal ‘Surprising’

Yerevan: EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas expressed surprise over the timing of a potential withdrawal of US troops from Europe, expected within six to 12 months, emphasizing the importance of strengthening Europe's role within NATO.

According to Anadolu Agency, Kallas made these remarks during the 8th meeting of the European Political Community in Yerevan. She highlighted that while discussions about the withdrawal have been ongoing, the timing of the announcement was unexpected. This development, she argued, underscores the necessity for Europe to significantly bolster its own capabilities within NATO and take on more responsibilities.

Kallas pointed out that American troops in Europe serve both European and American interests. She also mentioned the absence of US representatives at the meeting, which left questions about the US administration's stance, particularly former President Donald Trump's, unanswered.

The comments from Kallas follow the Pentagon's announcement of a reduction in US troop presence in Germany, the largest American military hub in Europe. This move comes amid rising tensions between Washington and its European allies over issues such as the Iran war and tariffs. A Pentagon spokesperson revealed that approximately 5,000 troops would be withdrawn from Germany, following an order by the US defense chief.

Kallas also emphasized the strategic importance of the Caucasus region amid ongoing tensions, including the conflict involving Iran. She noted that the Yerevan summit highlighted the significance of resilience and connectivity in the region. The Middle Corridor was described as 'extremely important' by Kallas, who argued that recent Middle East developments have reinforced the need to diversify trade routes and reduce reliance on vulnerable transit paths.

Finally, Kallas addressed Armenia's political future, stating that decisions regarding a potential European perspective should be made by the Armenian people in the context of upcoming elections.
