Gaza: EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell condemned on Monday the recent Israeli airstrike on Jabalia, northern Gaza, which resulted in scores of casualties, as calls for international intervention to halt Israel's genocidal attack on Palestinians intensify. On Sunday, Israeli airstrikes on Jabalia, Gaza's largest refugee camp, killed at least 36 Palestinians, including 15 children, while injuring scores more and leaving numerous people missing. According to Anadolu Agency, Borrell expressed deep concern over the incident in a statement on X, highlighting the use of terms like 'ethnic cleansing' to describe the ongoing situation in North Gaza. He emphasized the gravity of the humanitarian crisis and the violations of international law due to forced displacements. Borrell also warned of a looming famine in Gaza, citing a UN Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) alert that suggests a strong likelihood of famine spreading in North Gaza. He stressed that the use of hunger as a weapon of war cont ravenes international humanitarian law. The EU foreign policy chief called for urgent action to prevent what he described as a "manmade catastrophe." He urged Israel and its allies to take responsibility and implement urgent measures to alleviate Palestinian suffering and secure the release of hostages. Referring to the IPC report, Borrell emphasized the need for immediate action, stating that efforts by all involved parties are required within days, not weeks. He also reminded Israel of its obligations as an occupying power to facilitate the entry of aid.
