EU Leaders Set to Discuss Collective Response to Russian Airspace Violations at Upcoming Summit

Copenhagen: European Council President Antonio Costa announced that EU leaders will deliberate on a 'collective response' to Russia's repeated airspace violations during an upcoming informal summit in Copenhagen on October 1.

According to Anadolu Agency, Costa made this announcement on the US social media platform X, highlighting the need for a unified stance against Russian actions. This statement followed an incident reported by Estonia, where three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets allegedly breached Estonian airspace near Vaindloo Island without authorization, staying for almost 12 minutes.

In response to the incursion, the Estonian Foreign Ministry summoned Russia's charge d'affaires in Tallinn, with Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna condemning the breach as an 'unprecedentedly brutal' violation. Costa expressed his solidarity with Estonia, labeling the incident as 'another unacceptable provocation' and emphasizing the necessity for the EU to strengthen its Eastern defenses and enhance defense cooperation while escalating pressure on Russia.
