Wicklow: EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced plans for a new mission aimed at advising and training Lebanon's armed forces. The initiative, as emphasized by Kallas, is not intended to replace the existing UN peacekeeping force in the country but is focused on enhancing the capacity of Lebanon's military and state institutions to ensure national security.
According to Anadolu Agency, Kallas made this announcement during a press conference following an informal meeting of EU defense ministers in Wicklow, Ireland. The mission is intended to strengthen Lebanon's border and maritime security, as well as improve internal security capabilities. Kallas noted that preparations for the mission are advancing, with the EU aiming for a Council decision by October. Collaboration with the Lebanese government is ongoing to identify specific needs and coordinate contributions from EU member states, with more than ten countries expressing willingness to participate.
In addition to the mission in Lebanon, the ministers discussed broader regional issues, including the tense situation in the Middle East, particularly the hostilities between the US and Iran. Kallas highlighted the need for increased diplomatic efforts, noting the lack of significant progress in resolving the conflict.
Furthermore, EU defense ministers agreed on the importance of bolstering support for Ukraine and enhancing Europe's own defense capabilities. In light of this, Kallas urged EU nations to evaluate their military inventories and provide Ukraine with critical air defense systems, such as Patriot interceptors that are approaching the end of their service life.
Kallas also announced the formation of a new high-level defense group. This group will consist of senior political and military leaders from several EU countries, along with representatives from the UK and Ukraine, and aims to address gaps in Europe's conventional military power within NATO. The group is tasked with creating practical and innovative solutions to accelerate the enhancement of Europe's defense capabilities, focusing on delivering tangible results swiftly and effectively.
