Leipzig: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday expressed solidarity with Germany following the attempted drone attack at Leipzig Airport, emphasizing a decisive response to hybrid attacks after Berlin attributed the plot to Russia. 'The German government has taken strong measures. And the message is clear: hybrid attacks will not go without a clear response,' von der Leyen stated on US social media platform X.

According to Anadolu Agency, von der Leyen highlighted her discussions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, reaffirming the EU's unwavering support for Germany. She emphasized the commitment to maintain EU unity in the face of escalating challenges, declaring that they are united in their resolve to confront 'Russian aggression.' 'We will deter anyone who seeks to undermine our freedom and security. Russia is seeking to sow distrust and fear among our societies. But it will fail,' von der Leyen further remarked.

Von der Leyen also reaffirmed the EU's continued support for Ukraine, indicating that additional sanctions against Russia will be prepared by the foreign minister at their forthcoming meeting. On the same day, Germany accused Russia of orchestrating the attempted drone attack at Leipzig Airport last month, unveiling comprehensive measures and sanctions against Moscow.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, during a news conference in Berlin, disclosed that investigators had traced the plot back to Russian intelligence services, executed by low-level operatives. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, speaking at the same briefing, announced that the Russian ambassador had been summoned to convey Berlin's protest and inform Moscow of Germany's response. 'The Russian Consulate General in Bonn will close on Sept. 18. The agreement regarding the Russian House in Berlin is being terminated,' Wadephul declared.
