Luxembourg: EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced that European Union ministers are set to finalize the 19th sanctions package against Russia later this week, with Ukraine as a primary focus. The announcement came as ministers convened in Luxembourg to deliberate on new sanctions, the situation in Gaza, and global supply-chain risks in light of rising geopolitical tensions.

According to Anadolu Agency, Kallas expressed that the sanctions package is anticipated to be adopted this week, although it was not finalized during the current meeting. She noted that a leaders' meeting scheduled for Thursday will address the sanctions. Kallas emphasized that Russia only acknowledges strength and has not shown genuine interest in peace, despite recent diplomatic efforts by US President Donald Trump, who is planning to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest soon. Kallas expressed a preference for a meeting between Ukrainian President Zelenskyy and Putin to negotiate peace.

Additionally, Kallas highlighted the EU's efforts to tighten enforcement against Russia's 'shadow fleet,' a network allegedly aiding Moscow in bypassing Western oil-export restrictions. She mentioned ongoing discussions with EU member states to enhance coordination in tackling these evasive measures.

In relation to the Middle East, Kallas stated that EU ministers are evaluating the next steps following a recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. She described the ceasefire as a preliminary measure and stressed the need for sustainable peace efforts and humanitarian aid for Gaza civilians. The EU is considering sanctions against Israeli officials and broader trade measures, although Kallas noted that recent developments have altered the situation, necessitating further discussions among foreign ministers.
