EU Recommends Bulgaria as 21st Eurozone Member for 2026

Brussels: Euro area member states on Thursday recommended Bulgaria as the 21st eurozone member, targeting January 2026 for euro adoption. The recommendation signals a significant step forward for Bulgaria in its journey toward integrating more deeply into the European economic framework. According to Anadolu Agency, the EU's Ecofin Council is set to vote on legal acts for Bulgaria's accession on June 20, which requires a qualified majority for approval. This decision follows a statement from the European Council highlighting Bulgaria's progress in meeting the necessary convergence criteria, such as maintaining low inflation and ensuring fiscal discipline. Eurogroup President Paschal Donohoe emphasized the importance of this development, describing it as "a crucial step for Bulgaria's euro adoption in 2026." Bulgaria, which has been a member of the EU since 2007, has shown significant economic alignment with the eurozone standards. The Bulgarian currency, the lev, has been pegged to the euro since 1999, ensu ring stability and predictability in its economic dealings. The Council noted that Bulgaria's 2.7% inflation rate and 24.1% public debt are well below the EU limits, showcasing the country's commitment to maintaining economic stability. Furthermore, the European Central Bank previously confirmed Bulgaria's stable exchange rate and 3.9% interest rates, although it has called for continued reforms to ensure long-term stability and growth. As Bulgaria moves closer to adopting the euro, the upcoming vote by the Ecofin Council will be a determining factor in the country's path to joining the eurozone, marking a new chapter in its economic integration with Europe.
