Ankara: The EU has outlined plans to continue its investments in Trkiye, focusing on the country's efforts to achieve net zero emissions by 2053. Maria Luisa Wyganowski, head of cooperation at the EU Delegation to Trkiye, emphasized the ongoing cooperation between the EU and Trkiye since the implementation of the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA) funds.
According to Anadolu Agency, Wyganowski spoke at a Sustainable Transport Summit in Istanbul, organized by the Green Development Foundation (Yekav). She highlighted the EU's commitment to expanding investments in sustainable transportation and transitioning to a green economy as part of the Green Deal. Trkiye's strategic geographical location and its expanding energy and transportation infrastructure were noted as significant factors in this collaboration.
The Green Deal aims to modernize railways, expand electric vehicle (EV) charging networks, transition to a green public transport system, and boost renewable energy investments in Trkiye. Funding for these initiatives is expected to be announced soon. The shift to low-carbon production and environmentally friendly transportation is crucial for Trkiye's exports to the EU market, particularly in light of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
Wyganowski told Anadolu that Trkiye's sustainability efforts align with the goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2053. The EU is actively engaging in projects related to railway, transportation, maritime cooperation, and emissions trading with Trkiye to support these efforts. She emphasized the importance of increased private sector involvement, noting that public funds alone are insufficient to achieve all objectives.
Wyganowski also stressed the need for global cooperation on climate change. She highlighted the EU's determination to work closely with Trkiye and the private sector, acknowledging the significant partnership and mutual investor interest between the two parties.
