Brussels: The European Commission announced on Friday that the existing trade and investment relations between the European Union and China are "not sustainable." The Commission highlighted the need for a more coherent response from the bloc due to rising economic and security concerns.

According to Anadolu Agency, the statement was issued following a meeting of the College of Commissioners focused on the EU-China relationship. The Commission emphasized its policy of "de-risking, not decoupling" from China, reaffirming that China remains a critical partner and that engagement and dialogue will persist.

Nonetheless, the statement acknowledged escalating structural tensions in the relationship. It noted that the intertwining of economic and security interests requires a more robust and coherent response from the EU.

The European Commission indicated that the discussions from Friday's meeting would contribute to its work in the upcoming weeks, particularly in preparation for further deliberations at the G7 summit in France and the European Council meeting scheduled for June.
