Brussels: The European Union has emphasized the importance of maintaining respectful and constructive dialogue with its international partners following the Israeli foreign minister’s decision to sever ties with EU policy chief Kallas. Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert highlighted this stance during a midday press briefing, responding to questions about Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Suica’s scheduled meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Minister Sa’ar in Jerusalem.

According to Anadolu Agency, the meeting has been a long-planned diplomatic mission, where the EU’s consistent position on the regional conflict, support for Palestine’s reconstruction, and the situation in the West Bank are expected to be key discussion points. Lammert reiterated that the EU will continue to advocate for these issues, emphasizing their longstanding commitment.

The diplomatic rift arose after Sa’ar accused Kallas of unfairly comparing Israel to apartheid-era South Africa, leading to his decision to cut all contact. In a post on the social media platform X, Sa’ar accused Kallas of acting “obsessively and with blatant unfairness” toward Israel, further escalating tensions between the two parties.
