Brussels: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has committed to collaborating with international partners to ensure the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
According to Anadolu Agency, von der Leyen expressed her concerns on the US social media platform X, following a conversation with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. She highlighted that Iran's recent actions in the region are jeopardizing global economic stability, emphasizing the need for a concerted effort to restore navigational freedom as promptly as possible.
The discussion between von der Leyen and Starmer also touched upon the upcoming EU-UK summit, which von der Leyen described as a crucial opportunity to implement last year's commitments and enhance the bilateral partnership.
The disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have been ongoing since early March, following Iran's decision to restrict the waterway in response to the US-Israeli military operations that commenced on February 28. This strategic waterway is vital, as it facilitates the passage of around 20 million barrels of oil daily, accounting for approximately 20% of the global oil supply. The closure has resulted in increased global oil prices, shipping disruptions, and concerns over potential long-term economic repercussions.
