Brussels: The euro area seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained at 6.3% in April, unchanged from the previous year, as reported by Eurostat on Monday. This stability defied market expectations, which had anticipated a slight decrease to 6.2%.

According to Anadolu Agency, the European Union’s overall unemployment rate also held steady at 6%, showing no change from the previous month or April 2025. Eurostat estimated that a total of 13.24 million individuals were unemployed across the EU in April, with 11.08 million of these residing in the euro area.

The data highlighted a decline in the number of unemployed individuals from March to April, with a reduction of 137,000 in the EU and 84,000 in the euro area. However, on an annual basis, there was an increase in unemployment by 82,000 in the EU and 45,000 in the euro area.

Youth unemployment figures showed improvement, with 2.91 million people under the age of 25 unemployed in the EU, including 2.34 million in the euro area. The youth unemployment rate decreased to 15.1% in the EU from 15.6% in March, while the euro area saw a decline to 14.7% from 15.1%.

In terms of gender disparities, the unemployment rate for women in the EU dropped to 6.2% in April from 6.3% in March, whereas the rate for men remained stable at 5.8%. In the euro area, women’s unemployment fell to 6.5% from 6.6%, while the rate for men slightly decreased to 6% from 6.1%.
