London: The European Council of Imams has strongly condemned a recent visit by a group of individuals described as 'so-called imams' to Israel, calling the act a betrayal of basic Islamic principles and solidarity with the Palestinian people. The council stated that the delegation met with "criminal figures" in Israel amid a global outcry over the ongoing military assault on Gaza.

According to Anadolu Agency, the council expressed shock at media reports of the visit, describing it as "in stark contradiction to any human or moral sensibility." The council emphasized that the individuals involved are "unknown among European Muslims" and have no ties to "reputable religious institutions or trusted Islamic organizations." The visit, they stated, was provocative and served "suspicious agendas," misrepresenting the position of Muslims in Europe who have been actively protesting in support of Palestinians.

The statement further urged imams, scholars, and activists to intensify efforts in support of Palestinians and to resist attempts to "whitewash the crimes of the occupier," which it described as a betrayal of both religious and ethical principles. The council concluded by praying for the strength and victory of the Palestinian people.

Egypt's Al-Azhar also issued a condemnation, criticizing those involved in the visit for being insensitive to the suffering of Palestinians and neglecting moral values. Egypt's Grand Mufti Nazir Ayyad accused the clerics of promoting a "false peace" and questioned the nature of the dialogue conducted with the occupier.

The situation in Gaza remains dire, with Israel continuing its military actions despite international calls for a ceasefire. The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders for war crimes, and Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice.
