Brussels: The president of the European Council convened a video conference with EU leaders on Wednesday morning to brief French President Emmanuel Macron on his recent visit to the US ahead of the Special European Council on March 6.

According to Anadolu Agency, Antonio Costa announced the video conference on X, stating that the meeting would serve as preparation for the upcoming Special European Council. The purpose of the briefing was to inform EU leaders about Macron's discussions with US President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., especially concerning the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The discussions are set against the backdrop of increasing concerns regarding Ukraine's security and its prospects amidst the enduring conflict with Russia, which has persisted since February 2022. Costa had previously confirmed the scheduling of a special meeting of European leaders to address these pressing issues next week.

During Macron's visit to Washington on Monday, he engaged in talks aimed at securing enhanced security guarantees for Ukraine. Macron and Trump met at the White House on the third anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war to deliberate on bilateral relations and the negotiation process toward ending the conflict.

The talks held significant importance as they followed Trump's controversial remarks questioning US support for Ukraine. He described Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a "dictator without elections," raising doubts about the continuity of American involvement in the conflict.
