Davos: European countries' national interests are 'indexed on the temperature in the Middle East,' the French foreign minister said Thursday. In a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Jean-Noel Barrot highlighted the intricate connection between Europe's foreign policy and Middle Eastern affairs, emphasizing that such interests are fundamentally linked to regional issues of terrorism and migration, both of which significantly impact France.

According to Anadolu Agency, Barrot pointed out that despite occasional misalignments between European and US foreign policies, collaboration remains possible. He explained that European countries prioritize developments in the Middle East because their national interests are closely tied to the region's stability. Barrot underscored France's commitment to contributing to the reconstruction and political stabilization of countries like Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria. France is already collaborating with Saudi Arabia and other regional partners in preparation for the UN International Conference scheduled for June 2025 in New York, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France.

Furthermore, Minister Barrot addressed France's stance on the recognition of Palestine as a state, noting that such recognition should be part of a broader two-state solution that includes mutual recognition and security guarantees.

On the subject of Iran's nuclear program, Barrot warned of the 'massive security issues' it could pose for Europe and the global community. He advocated for negotiations encompassing Iran's nuclear and ballistic programs, as well as regional aspects, to avoid resorting to brute force. Barrot argued that a rational approach is essential, as brute force is unlikely to produce positive outcomes for the region, Iran, Europe, or the US.
