European Leaders Back Trump’s Comprehensive Gaza Peace Initiative

Brussels: Several European leaders on Tuesday expressed strong support for US President Donald Trump's newly unveiled plan aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

According to Anadolu Agency, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen conveyed her approval via the US social media company X, emphasizing the EU's readiness to contribute to Trump's efforts. She reiterated that a two-state solution remains the sole viable route to achieving long-lasting peace in the Middle East. Von der Leyen also highlighted the urgent need for an end to hostilities, the provision of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, and the release of all hostages.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas echoed these sentiments, describing Trump's plan as an opportunity for enduring peace and the most immediate path to ending the conflict. European Council President Antonio Costa also welcomed the initiative, urging all involved parties to genuinely consider this chance for peace.

French President Emmanuel Macron called on Israel to engage decisively with the plan and insisted that Hamas must release all hostages and comply with the proposed framework. He stressed the importance of comprehensive discussions with relevant partners to establish a durable peace in the region. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also praised the US initiative, committing to building consensus for a permanent ceasefire.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz took to X to express Germany's readiness to assist in implementing Trump's plan and commended Israel's support for the proposal. Finnish President Alexander Stubb urged all parties to work towards ending the war and building a secure future for both Palestinians and Israelis.

The Swiss Foreign Ministry expressed its support for any initiative grounded in international law that ensures civilian protection, humanitarian access, and the release of hostages. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the plan as ambitious, highlighting its potential for stabilizing and reconstructing Gaza with regional cooperation.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez emphasized the necessity of ending violence and suffering, advocating for a two-state solution where Israel and Palestine coexist peacefully. Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof stressed the importance of the plan as a significant step toward a two-state resolution.

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot welcomed the plan, noting its potential to lead to a ceasefire, humanitarian access, and the reconstruction of Gaza. Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire to halt bloodshed and increase humanitarian aid.

Irish Taoiseach Micheal Martin called for an inclusive peace process that respects the identities and aspirations of all parties involved, while Malta's Prime Minister Robert Abela underscored the importance of a just two-state solution. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson commended Trump's commitment to ending the suffering in Gaza and urged all parties to work towards this shared goal.

On Monday, President Trump announced a comprehensive 20-point plan to end the conflict between Israel and Gaza during a news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The plan includes provisions for the release of Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, the complete disarmament of Hamas, and the establishment of a technocratic, non-political Palestinian committee to govern the region.
