Berlin: Political leaders across Europe congratulated conservative leader Friedrich Merz after Germany's parliament elected him Tuesday as chancellor in a second round of voting. European Council President Antonio Costa extended "warm congratulations" to Merz, saying he is looking forward to their work together on an ambitious common European agenda.
According to Anadolu Agency, French President Emmanuel Macron noted the importance of the Franco-German alliance, stating, "It is up to us to make the Franco-German engine and reflex stronger than ever." Macron emphasized the need to accelerate the European agenda of sovereignty, security, and competitiveness for the benefit of all Europeans.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer echoed these sentiments, expressing his eagerness to collaborate with Merz to deliver national and economic security for both countries. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni highlighted the importance of cooperation between Germany and Italy, particularly in reviving competitiveness in the automotive sector and addressing global challenges like irregular immigration.
Irish Taoiseach Micheal Martin affirmed Germany's valued partnership with Ireland and expressed his desire to work with Merz to strengthen ties between Berlin and Dublin, as well as enhance Europe's overall strength and prosperity. Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever and Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker also conveyed their congratulations, underscoring the importance of close cooperation between neighboring countries.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez emphasized the importance of maintaining strong ties and working towards a united Europe. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also joined in congratulating Merz.
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof and Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo highlighted the significance of Germany's leadership in Europe, particularly within the EU and NATO. Kosovo's President Vjosa Osmani stressed the importance of Germany's leadership for Kosovo's path toward EU and NATO membership.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Latvia's Prime Minister Evika Silina reiterated their commitment to deepening ties with Germany, while NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte emphasized Merz's crucial role in ensuring the readiness and defense capabilities of allies.
Merz's election as Germany's 10th chancellor since World War II follows a coalition deal between the Christian Democrats and the Social Democrats after snap elections in February. Under the new coalition government, the CDU/CSU alliance will manage critical portfolios, including foreign, interior, and economy ministries, while the Social Democrats will oversee seven ministries, including finance, defense, and labor.
