Brussels: Numerous European leaders on Monday voiced their support for Syria's stability and reconstruction as the country marked the first anniversary of the fall of Bashar Assad's regime. "The EU will continue to support Syrians' aspirations for a stable, prosperous and democratic country. It looks forward to working in a spirit of partnership to address the shared challenges facing Syria, the region and Europe," stated a joint communication by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Suica, and Hadja Lahbib, commissioner for preparedness, crisis management, and equality.
According to Anadolu Agency, the statement conveyed the EU's "concern" about the ongoing violence since March across Syria, emphasizing that peace and stability cannot be achieved without national dialogue, reconciliation, and transitional justice. The EU also condemned foreign military actions and attempts to destabilize Syria, urging respect for Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity as per UN Security Council resolution 497 (1981).
The EU statement acknowledged the commitments made by transitional authorities towards a "peaceful and inclusive transition" and the progress achieved since December 2024. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares remarked on social media platform X about his visit to Damascus to raise the Spanish flag at the Embassy of Spain, highlighting Spain's support for Syria's path towards stability and justice.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide affirmed Norway's dedication to contributing to Syria's peaceful transition and reconstruction. Kosovo's President Vjosa Osmani also expressed commitment to collaborating with Syria, emphasizing a shared history of overcoming oppression and the importance of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
Assad, who led Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia last December, concluding the Baath Party regime's rule since 1963. Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa's transitional government was established in January, marking a new chapter for the country.
