Brussels: The euro area's unemployment rate dropped to 6.1% in January, down from 6.2% in December 2025, Eurostat reported on Wednesday. This decrease defied market predictions, which had anticipated the rate to remain steady at 6.2%.
According to Anadolu Agency, the broader European Union (EU) also experienced a decline in unemployment, with the jobless rate falling to 5.8% in January from 5.9% in December. Eurostat's estimates revealed that 12.93 million people were unemployed across the EU in January, with 10.77 million of those in the eurozone. This represents a reduction of 185,000 unemployed individuals in the EU and 184,000 in the euro area compared to the previous month.
Additionally, youth unemployment figures showed a decrease, with about 2.92 million individuals aged 25 and under out of work in the EU, including 2.35 million in the eurozone. The youth unemployment rate fell to 15.1% in the EU, down from 15.2% in December, and to 14.8% in the euro area.
Among EU nations, Finland recorded the highest overall unemployment rate at 10.2% in January, while Bulgaria and Poland experienced the lowest rates at 3.1%. The euro area, also known as EA21, consists of EU member states that have adopted the euro as their currency.
