Paris:EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has issued a warning about the serious risk of renewed escalation between the United States and Iran. She emphasized that any further confrontation would not benefit either side, speaking at a news conference following the European Group of Five defense ministers' meeting.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Kallas's remarks coincided with discussions on Middle East security, maritime security, and European defense readiness. She highlighted the role of the EU's naval Operation Aspides in maintaining the flow of cargo and oil through the Red Sea, acknowledging contributions from France, Italy, and Greece.
Kallas also noted that more than 60 countries have joined the EU's pledge against tolls and fees on international shipping routes, emphasizing the necessity of unimpeded navigation. She mentioned the establishment of a new EU mission in Lebanon to advise and train the country's armed and internal security forces, aiming to strengthen territorial control and security.
On the topic of Ukraine, Kallas pointed out the disparity between diplomatic efforts and Russia's ongoing attacks. She expressed skepticism about the prospects for imminent peace, noting the challenges Ukraine faces as winter approaches. Kallas called for increased sanctions and greater pressure on Russia's shadow fleet to raise operational costs.
