Paris: France's former Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin has expressed that US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's actions concerning Iran should face "real and tangible consequences."

According to Anadolu Agency, Villepin emphasized on BFM TV that countries involved in illegitimate and illegal interventions should be held accountable for reconstructing what they have destroyed. He proposed that a United Nations General Assembly resolution could establish a principle of reparations, given the deadlock in the Security Council.

Villepin further advocated for sanctions against Israel, which has intensified its military operations in Lebanon. He highlighted the potential for economic and political sanctions and criticized France's lack of initiative in rallying the European Union on issues related to Lebanon and the Middle East.

He commended Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez for his stance in preserving "Europe's honor" by refusing US requests to use Spanish bases for attacking Iran. The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with Israeli airstrikes reportedly killing over 400 people and displacing thousands in Lebanon since Monday, amidst ongoing clashes with Hezbollah.

The escalation follows a joint US-Israeli attack on Iran, which resulted in over 1,200 deaths, including that of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran's subsequent retaliation included drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets.
