Tehran: Explosions were heard in Iran on Wednesday evening, shortly after US President Donald Trump's threat to carry out new strikes on the country.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Mehr News Agency reported that eight blasts were heard in Bandar Abbas, a city in southern Iran. Additionally, Iran's state news agency IRNA stated that approximately ten explosions occurred in Chabahar and Konarak, located in southeastern Iran, resulting in power outages in parts of Chabahar.
Further reports from Mehr News Agency indicated that explosions were also heard in Iran's southwestern Bushehr province. Iran's state broadcaster IRIB detailed incidents of explosions in the village of Tahrouyi near Sirik, on Abu Musa Island near the Strait of Hormuz, and in the southeastern port city of Jask.
Mehr reported that Iranian air defenses engaged 'hostile targets' around Bandar Abbas. The US military's Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that American forces had initiated a new series of strikes against Iran, aiming to further degrade Tehran's capability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump had previously indicated that Washington would "probably" strike Iran again on Wednesday night, following overnight US strikes in response to attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
