FIFA Plans $220M Prize for 2027 Women’s World Cup, Doubling 2023 Payout

Zurich:FIFA is planning to double the prize money for the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil to $220 million. This increase, however, will not meet the goal of matching the men's tournament prize pool, as reported by Sky News.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the intended prize money for 2027 represents a significant rise from the $110 million awarded at the 2023 Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, and from the $30 million distributed in 2019. Despite this, the proposed amount still falls short of the $655 million allocated for the 2026 Men's World Cup.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino had pledged in 2023 to strive for equal prize money for the men's 2026 and the women's 2027 tournaments. The organization also anticipates the 2027 Women's World Cup to be the first to turn a profit.

FIFA has confirmed that each of the 32 participating national teams will receive $2.5 million in preparation funding, aligning with the funds allocated for the 2026 men's tournament teams. This brings the total preparation funding to $80 million, a significant increase from $30.7 million in 2023.

FIFA is also considering doubling the payments to clubs that release players for the Women's World Cup or have contributed to their development, from $11.3 million in 2023 to approximately $22.6 million. Additionally, the minimum payment guaranteed to each player, which was $30,000 in 2023, is expected to increase.

FIFA stated that any surplus generated by the tournament would be distributed to participating national associations, with a portion specifically reserved for players. The governing body has yet to formally announce the proposed prize money and indicated that further details of its financial distribution model will be discussed at a FIFA Council meeting in December.
