Finland Halts Google’s Data Center Preparations Over Environmental Concerns

Muhos:Finland's Licensing and Supervision Agency has ordered Google's subsidiary to suspend certain preparatory activities at two planned data center sites due to environmental concerns. The suspension affects projects in Muhos and Kajaani, requiring work to stop by October 23.

According to Anadolu Agency, the agency's directive requires Tuike Finland Oy to cease activities such as tree removal, topsoil stripping, and excavation until environmental impact assessments are completed. However, planning and minor activities with reversible effects are allowed to continue.

Environmental department head Tommi Muilu expressed concerns that the extensive work already undertaken might compromise the assessment process, reducing the chances to explore alternatives and prevent environmental damage. The subsidiary has been given until October 14 to provide a written explanation regarding its compliance intentions.

The agency has indicated it could resort to compulsory enforcement measures backed by a conditional fine if the company does not adhere to the directive, though it prefers voluntary compliance. The environmental assessments for both data center projects are still in progress, with reports expected by the end of the year.

This intervention follows Google's announcement of a significant investment plan, pledging at least £13 billion ($14.5 billion) in Finnish digital infrastructure by 2027 and 2028. The investment includes data centers, energy partnerships, and local community initiatives across several Finnish locations. Google anticipates that the construction phase will contribute an average of £3.6 billion annually to Finland's GDP and support over 37,000 jobs nationwide, with 7,000 jobs annually supported once the facilities are operational.
