Brussels: Finland temporarily restricted air and maritime traffic in the eastern Gulf of Finland on Saturday as a precaution against a potential drone threat, according to public broadcaster Yle. The restrictions were put in place to ensure safety and allow authorities to manage any possible drone activity effectively.

According to Anadolu Agency, the maritime restriction off the southeastern city of Kotka took effect at 5.45 am local time (0245GMT) and was lifted at 9 am (0600GMT), as reported by the Finnish defense forces on the US social media platform X. Airspace in the area was also simultaneously restricted due to the 'evolving situation,' highlighting concerns over potential drone incursions.

The primary goal of the measure was to protect bystanders and ensure that authorities were in a position to counter any threat posed by drones. Despite the heightened alert, no drones entered Finnish territory during the incident, as confirmed by Katri Kokkola, a communications specialist at the Defense Command.

In response to the situation, the Finnish military bolstered air defense readiness in southeastern Finland. Fighter jets were observed flying repeatedly in the area as part of this increased vigilance. The restrictions were linked to Ukrainian drone attacks targeting Russia, providing context for the precautionary measures taken by Finnish authorities.
