Finland Proposes Ban on Russian Athletes Amid Ongoing Conflict

Helsinki:Finland is set to implement a national ban on Russian athletes entering the country, according to Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen. The decision comes as Finland aims to act independently of potential European Union regulations.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Valtonen expressed the government's intention to advance this measure on a national level. Specific details regarding the implementation of the ban are expected to be disclosed later this week.

Valtonen emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating on the social media platform X that Russian athletes would not be welcomed in Finland next year if Russia's aggressive actions persist. She also highlighted her efforts to urge European Union counterparts to restrict Russian athletes' access to the entire Schengen area, mentioning that the European Commission is addressing the issue.

The proposed restrictions would not require legislative amendments, as other measures are deemed sufficient. The ban would apply to athletes competing without national symbols, not just those representing their national teams. Valtonen clarified that visa legislation is linked to citizenship rather than the symbols under which athletes participate.

Under the current visa regulations, Russian athletes can enter Finland for employment-related purposes if they meet the necessary requirements. Upcoming sports events include the arrival of Russian cross-country skiers in Ruka for the Cross-Country Skiing World Cup in November and Russian ice hockey players for NHL games next week.
