Helsinki: Finland's Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday that it has summoned the Russian ambassador to provide an explanation regarding a suspected airspace violation by a Russian military aircraft. The incident in question occurred on Wednesday in the Gulf of Finland near the Porkkala peninsula.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Finnish Foreign Ministry took to the US social media platform X to communicate the summoning of the Russian ambassador. The ministry's post highlighted the necessity of addressing the suspected breach of Finnish airspace, an event that has raised significant concerns within the Finnish government.
The alleged airspace violation reportedly happened as a Russian military aircraft attempted to evade thunderstorms, as stated by Finland's Defense Ministry. In response to the situation, the Finnish Air Force conducted what officials described as an operational flight to address the incident.
Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen has confirmed that an immediate investigation has been launched into the suspected violation. Finnish authorities have tasked the Border Guard with leading the investigation, and they have pledged to provide further updates as the inquiry unfolds.
