Ankara: Ankara University National Research Center for Maritime Law (DEHUKAM) has released the pioneering academic study on Trkiye's Marine Spatial Planning (MSP), a significant move aimed at optimizing the sustainable use of the country's surrounding seas. Trkiye's longstanding efforts in marine spatial planning are nearing completion, thanks to contributions from key institutions that have been working towards protecting national interests and maximizing marine area utilization.

According to Anadolu Agency, the initiative includes the publication of a map on the website 'www.dmpturkiye.dehukam.org', which outlines designated zones beyond Trkiye's territorial waters for economic, scientific, and military activities. This academic effort aligns with the European Union's relevant legislation and aims to safeguard Trkiye's maritime rights.

The study highlights the establishment of a high-level "Inter-Institutional Coordination Committee" under the Presidency, coordinated by the Foreign Ministry, to manage MSP matters. This plan functions as a comprehensive guide for maritime area usage and is anticipated to enhance understanding of the "Blue Homeland" concept.

DEHUKAM has emphasized that MSP is crucial for effective governance of seas, addressing economic development, food security, and ecosystem health. The process balances various uses such as fisheries, energy production, transportation, and tourism, promoting optimal and sustainable exploitation of marine spaces. Despite not officially adopting MSP, Trkiye has made significant strides through collaborations among public institutions, universities, and civil society.

The Trkiye MSP Platform, established by DEHUKAM, serves as a structured framework showcasing MSP efforts. It provides up-to-date information on projects and legislative infrastructure, supported by a strategic map that presents potential marine activities and planning needs.

DEHUKAM CEO Mustafa Baskara noted that increasing marine resource utilization threatens sustainability, emphasizing Trkiye's sovereign approach to MSP. The map, described as a 'living map,' is expected to support Trkiye's blue economy and evolving marine needs, reflecting a commitment to sustainable and scientific management of marine areas.
