Foreign Funding Fuels Illegal Israeli Settlements in West Bank

Jerusalem: Financing remains a critical factor in the expansion of Israeli settlements across the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

According to Anadolu Agency, while the mechanisms behind settlement funding rarely surface in official or media reports, several channels of financial support have been identified, including public budgets, foreign companies, and private donations.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights recently updated its database to include 158 companies operating in Israeli settlements, with 20 foreign firms from countries such as the US, UK, and France. Major US companies involved include Airbnb, Booking Holdings, and TripAdvisor, among others. Reports also indicate that Israeli banks and foreign financial institutions, including French banks, are involved in facilitating settlement projects.

Large donations from right-wing organizations and private donors play a significant role in funding settlements. Over $220 million was transferred by US Jewish organizations to illegal settlers in the West Bank between 2009 and 2013. Additionally, major foreign donors like the Central Fund of Israel and the Hebron Fund have contributed millions to settlements.

Israeli settler groups such as Elad have received substantial foreign funds to support their activities in reshaping occupied territories. Between 2006 and 2013, Elad received around 450 million shekels, with more than half originating from offshore locations.

The number of illegal Israeli settlers in the West Bank has exceeded 730,000, with escalating violence against Palestinians. Palestinian officials warn of potential annexation of the West Bank, which could end the possibility of a two-state solution. The International Court of Justice has declared Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories illegal, calling for the evacuation of all settlements.
